ILGA-Europe and ENAR Campaign with #NoHateEP2014

Jointly with ILGA-Europe (European Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and  Intersex Association) ENAR (the European Network Against Racism) has  called on European political parties to sign their Appeal for an election  campaign free from discrimination and intolerance, which the PES, ALDE,  Greens, Left parties have signed and the EPP has supported.

The campaign includes a video and an engaging infographic encouraging voters to pick candidates who support equality and diversity.

An online form was launched, enabling the public to report discriminatory or intolerant incidents during the campaign. Out of 30 reported hate speech incidents against minorities, two thirds (21 reports) involve implicit incitement to hatred, prejudice or discrimination, which is turning out to be the most frequent form of hate speech in this campaign.

Candidates and other politicians have most frequently attacked migrants, foreigners and asylum-seekers (over 5 in 10 times), LGBTI people (3 in 10), but also Muslims (almost 2 in 10). One incident in Hungary targeted both LGBTI people and migrants, and one in Sweden implicitly targeted Roma people.

Finally, hate speech appears to remain privy to far-right parties: in two thirds of incidents (19 reports), parties without any European affiliation were at fault. When including all far-right European parties (the European Alliance for Freedom, the Alliance of European National Movements, and the Movement for a Europe of Liberties and Democracy), the total rises to almost 85% of incidents (25 reports). One report involves an observer member of the PES, and two involve full member parties of the EPP.

Hearing on Afrophobia in the EU: need to tackle the issue through data collection and EU strategies

MEPs from the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance, in collaboration with ENAR and the European Coalition of Cities Against Racism (ECCAR) organized a European hearing on Afrophobia on 20 February 2014 in the European Parliament. There were a lot of inspiring and contributions that highlighted the need to recognize the problem of Afrophobia. Main conclusions: we need to tackle Afrophobia in Europe on all fronts, to collect data on the social and economic situation of people of African descent in Europe, and to push for an effective European strategy for their inclusion.

On 14 February 2014 ENAR welcomed the official condemnation of Romania's President Traian Basescu for making racist remarks against the Roma. Despite the symbolic fine of 130€ (600 lei), it shows that everybody, even high-level political figures, can and should be held accountable for hate speech.

New ENAR campaign:“I vote for diversity”

In close collaboration with ENAR members, ENAR Europe is coordinating a pan-European campaign and advocacy work on the European elections. ENAR makes it a priority to stop the rise of candidates who are using and propagating far-right ideas or programmes for the European Parliament and to push mainstream parties to take a stand for equality (and against populist sentiments). Do you also support diversity and equality? Then join the campaign by taking a selfie with the “I vote for diversity” logo! It will be shared on ENAR Facebook page.
